Twitter has suspended the account of one of Mexico’s wealthiest men, who also happens to be a close ally of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for alleged violations of the social media platform’s abusive and harassing behaviour policies.
Apparently received from Twitter, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, a business magnate with significant operations in retail, banking, and television, posted on his Instagram account on Wednesday a message advising him that he could not participate in harassment directed toward someone or incite others to do so, according to the message.
As part of the alleged offensive tweets directed at some of the most prominent journalists in Mexico, Salinas Pliego also posted a call for people to create memes mocking the journalists, which was subsequently deleted.
“There are people who seek to promote their ideas while simultaneously silencing the ideas of others,” Salinas Pliego wrote in a comment on his post, before going on to make derogatory remarks about the journalists who responded to him.
