Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Could Be the End of the Dutton Saga Everything We Know So Far

When Yellowstone returns, it will reportedly be for the series’ final episode (at least for the main show, with several spinoffs still underway or planned). Those episodes may be devoid of the head of the Dutton family, Kevin Costner‘s John Dutton, as reports are flying about his possible refusal to return to film the final episode.

Whether or not John is fired in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, however, the Dutton family is committed to keeping their ranching legacy alive.

The battle for the future of the Ranch will be a civil war this time, as the Season 5 Part 1 finale pitted John and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) against Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). It’s hard to imagine reconciliation amid TV’s most toxic sibling rivalry; The potential for bloodshed is much greater in this series from Taylor Sheridan.

Given the extended mid-season hiatus, Yellowstone fans may be wondering what to expect from Part 2, and we’re here to help. Here’s everything you need to know about the final episode of Yellowstone so far.

“Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2” Will Kevin Costner be in

For some time, there were rumors that Costner was done with Yellowstone. His commitment to his four-film Western saga, Horizon, which he directed, co-wrote and starred in, outweighed his commitment to finishing Yellowstone. Not only did the actor want to see the Paramount Network series that won him a Golden Globe continue, but he reportedly requested an abbreviated filming schedule for Season 5 Part 2.

This scheduling issue was said to have led to a dispute with Sheridan, who reportedly preferred not to include Costner in the final episode rather than keeping him on set for less time than the series required. At Costner’s divorce hearing in September 2023, the actor stated that Season 5 was not to be filmed and released in the first two parts. When that change was made, it conflicted with Costner’s previously scheduled schedule for Horizon.

They wanted to do 5A and 5B; [It] affected Horizon,” Costner said, according to Deadline. “I was going to do my movie Horizon and leave that show, do my movie, then do B. [But] a show I was only doing once a year, now I’m doing twice Am.”

According to industry newspaper Puck, Costner wants to make at least a cameo in the final episode, if not more, now that Sheridan’s script for Season 5 Part 2 is complete

Will Yellowstone kill John Dutton? How else?

Costner is said to have a clause in his contract that requires a meaningful death for John should the character be killed off. Given how deadly the show is (the Duttons’ eldest child, Lee Dutton, died in Season 1, and there are explosive attempts to kill off the rest of the family throughout the series), fans have long been It is believed that a major death is possible in the family. Fan theories about how John may have died in the series have been floating around for years.

One theory in particular seems incredibly likely: John was diagnosed with colon cancer in Season 1, which increased the pressure on him to decide which of his children would run the farm after he was gone. Surgery helped cure the cancer, but a scare emerged in Season 2 when John began coughing up blood. It turned out to be a burst ulcer which was treated by a veterinarian in a very gruesome scene at the farm. If John is killed off-camera, his cancer return is an easily explained death that ties into the first season satisfyingly.

Has Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Started Filming?

Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in spring 2024. Reilly said in a March 2024 interview that she had not yet returned to the set.

Reilly confirmed that “discussions are ongoing” about the show’s future after Season 5 Part 2 but did not comment on reports that the series would be revamped with Matthew McConaughey as the star. The alleged feud between Costner and Sheridan may also have been blown out of proportion.

Don’t believe everything you read. This is absolute nonsense,” Reilly said, not specifying which rumors she was referencing. She added, “I don’t have an answer right now.” “But we’ll see.”

Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, said he is ready to see how the story ends.

“In every way, good and bad, nothing will be the same because of this show,” he told People. “I will miss it very much. I know that. I mean, I think I’m ready to find out how it ends. I’m ready to tell the end of the story.
