Amazon reveals title of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series 

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The much-anticipated “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” series will be titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” according to a statement released by streaming platform Amazon Prime Video.

The epic drama, which is based on JRR Tolkien’s fabled Second Age of Middle-history earth’s during which the rings were forged by Sauron, will premiere on September 2 and air new episodes on a weekly basis thereafter.

Amazon made the announcement in a new video that was shared across the streaming service’s social media platforms on Wednesday morning.

According to Variety, the “Lord of the Rings” television series is overseen by showrunners and executive producers JD Payne and Patrick McKay.

Tolkien’s other classics, Payne and McKay say the title of the series is one that they imagine could be placed on the spine of a book alongside the others.

“In ‘The Rings of Power,’ Tolkien brings together all of the major stories of Middle-Second earth’s Age in one book: the forging of the Rings of Power, the ascension of Sauron to the throne of power, the epic tale of Numenor, and the Last Alliance between elves and men.

Until now, audiences have only seen the storey of the One Ring on screen – but there were many before there was one, and we’re excited to share the epic storey of them all, as well as the storey of the One Ring “According to the showrunners,

A synopsis for “The Rings of Power” describes it as follows: “The series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they battle against the long-feared re-emergence of evil in Middle-earth.”

These kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that will live on long after they have passed away, from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of elf-capital Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Numenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, the statement continued.

Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, and Sir Lenny Henry are among the stars of the ensemble cast, which also includes Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cord

In addition to Lindsey Weber and Callum Greene, JA Bayona, Belen Atienza and Justin Doble are executive producers, as are Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado, among others.

The film is being produced by Christopher Newman.

Amazon has already placed an order for a second season of the show.

The Amazon Studios production will be done in collaboration with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros Entertainment, and will air on Amazon Prime Video.
